Film Reviews: “Tales from the Crypt” (1972)

Before the HBO TV series, there was this anthology film, which is based off the comic books from the 1950’s. The Crypt Keeper is present, but in a more subdued form. Several strangers end up in the crypt and they don’t know why they are there. The Crypt Keeper gives each of them a grim version of their futures. Peter Cushing gives a standout emotional performance as a man who cares for the children in his neighborhood and is treated badly by his neighbors. Due to their cruelty, he commits suicide. One year later something strange happens. Another tale, which was also in the HBO series, is about a woman who, on Christmas Eve, kills her husband and tries to cover it up, while also battling a psycho-Santa trying to break into her home. It’s an odd mix of 50’s camp and distinguished British ‘Hammer’ style horror from the early 70’s. For fans of the series, or anyone in general, I recommend this for a ghoulishly good time!
