Directed by Noah Baumbach. Starring Ben Stiller & Greta Gerwig.
Roger Greenberg (Stiller) is angsty, anxious, blunt, and hates that he is that way. He is recently released from a mental hospital, “but that doesn’t define me” he says. While house sitting for his brother for 6 weeks, Greenberg encounters Florence (Gerwig), his brother’s personal assistant. Florence is friendly, attractive, and vulnerable from a recent breakup. The two begin dating…Or not. Neither character is sure. They awkwardly interact. Even though Greenberg has temper issues and pushes her away, Florence is too nice to not accept his apologies. At one point she says to Greenberg, “Hurt people, hurt people.” So true. Roger Greenberg has finally found a woman who wants to love him, but the man she knows is not who he wants to be. Greenberg struggles to find the real him, and eventually we meet him. Great role for both actors! Stiller is as interesting here as he was in “Permanent Midnight”, another good film.
